5 Tips to Stay with Your New Year’s Goal

The start of the New Year is always a time where people set a new intention for the upcoming year. They promise to actually commit to this year’s resolution. But how do you actually stay with those goals that you made? Here are a few tips to help develop some habits that will put you on track to finally sticking with your goal:

  1. Put it in your calendar! Whether you utilize the calendar app in your phone, keep a day planner, or are a post-it person, schedule time for yourself to dedicate to your goal. Schedule that workout, your study time, put aside the hour to head to the grocery store. Start with 5 minutes, build up to 15, then 30 then an hour if that’s what you need. Whatever it is—plan for it!

  2. Get support! It’s hard to stick to a goal when you are the only one who knows about it. Tell your friends, partner, family, etc. Maybe you will find a new workout buddy just by sharing your intentions with someone! These people are all rooting for you, they will help keep you accountable!

  3. Avoid eliminating and instead replace. Maybe you are trying to cut out those late night cravings? Instead of eliminating desert after dinner, replace it with something else. Usually have a bowl of ice cream? Try a jello chocolate pudding instead—less calories and sugar but still satisfies the craving!

  4. Be realistic. If you are trying to lose weight or change your body composition, understand that this takes time. If you want to lose inches or gain muscle, it isn’t going to happen overnight. Be ok with starting the journey and the process that is going to get you there and expect that it may take months to build the results you are looking for!

  5. Find your why. Why do you want to change your body composition? Why do you want to eat at home more? Why are you working towards this goal? Find that reason and use that as your daily motivator. Always refer back to this!
